Subject: Homicide at Covent Garden
Right then, Detectives. We've got a nasty one in Covent Garden.
At 03:45 this morning, the London Fire Brigade responded to a blaze at a small, cluttered shop in Rose Alley called "Croft's Cartography." After they knocked down the flames, they found more than just burnt paper. They found the body of the owner, a 72-year-old map-maker named Julian Croft.
Don't be fooled by the fire. The initial report from the Coroner is already in: Croft was dead before the first lick of flame. He was killed by a heavy blow to the back of the head. The fire was arson, a clumsy attempt to cover up a murder.
The scene is a mess of charred maps, shattered glass, and secrets. The victim was a well-respected traditionalist in a high-tech world, but he had rivalries. He was sitting on a piece of prime London real estate that a ruthless developer wanted. He was also in the middle of a bitter feud with his oldest friend.
